I previously used an USB 2 dock like the present one but was troubled by the slower speed of USB 2 relative to USB 3 - the data I regularly needed to shift around was getting bigger and bigger - mainly Acronis backup files. As a freelance technician I place backups on whichever convenient portable hdd I can get my hands on on the day. But when I get home I have to put the backups in some sort of file order hence the need to copy backwards and forwards.

I've upgraded all my gear for disk for this purpose to USB 3 adapters. When producing or transferring large files or making new backup files the higher speed is essential. With the USB 2 gear I found myself hanging around for hours!

The software power switch is a bit of a problem in that it can come on by itself sometime or when I inadvertently brush my fingers past the thing. It would be better to have a physical switch.

Fast data transfer as supported by USB 3.
Software switch is too easy to make it come on.

Mains power when using 2.5” HDD?

This product comes with a main power cable but does it need to be plugged in if you are only using a 2.5” (Laptop) hard drive?

I think you do, because this unit is a bit different to a 2.5" enclosure. Please visit the below manufacturer's link for full info.
